Apremavi's mission is to defend, preserve, and recover the environment and cultural values, seeking sustainability in all dimensions and improving the quality of life in the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil.
Since 1987, Apremavi has led a great effort to steward environmental policies, by helping to create public and private conservation units, build training and environmental education programs, in addition to acting daily in restoring and recovering degraded areas in the Atlantic Rainforest region in the south of Brazil. To date, the organization has helped to produce and plant more than 9 million native trees.
The non-profit's headquarters are in the community of Alto Dona Luiza in Atalanta, Santa Catarina State, in an environmental center located next to a nursery for native tree seedlings. The Jardim das Florestas Nursery is one of the largest nurseries in the south of Brazil, and is the flagship of Apremavi with the capacity to produce around one million seedlings per year, of up to 200 different native species of the Atlantic Rainforest.
Self-sufficient in production, Apremavi’s nursery is a technological center due to its research, especially in growing native species, and the use of the Ellepot system, a degradable paper package certified by the Rainforest Alliance and the FSC. This system eliminates the use of bags or plastic tubes in the production of seedlings, allows direct planting without unpacking, optimizes the planting time, prevents deformation of the roots, and facilitates manual and mechanized planting. The seedlings produced at the nursery are used in seven ongoing restoration projects linked to six thematic areas: Property and Landscape Planning; Conservation of Biodiversity; Climate and Forest Restoration; Environmental Education and Information; Institutional Development, and Public Policies.
Throughout the years Apremavi formed partnerships with companies, public authorities, non-governmental organizations, universities, cooperatives, and associations, always seeking to improve its action strategy and work. Apremavi also became part of, helped to create, and took a seat at local, national, and international collectives and networks that seek the implementation of environmental laws, the conservation of biodiversity, and sustainable development based on a green economy.
To strengthen its work and share experiences, Apremavi is part of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Forest Dialogue, the Climate Observatory, and the Atlantic Forest NGO Network (RMA). It has a seat at the Brazilian and the International Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). In 2022, Apremavi became an official partner of the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration.
The organization believes that its decades of experience in restoration projects can contribute to the Good Practices and Biodiversity Tasks Forces by sharing data and successful methodologies on ecosystem restoration. It would also like to follow up as a listener on the Carbon Markets & Investment Ecosystem Task Force to learn from experts on the demands of the developing carbon market.
