The Brazilian Coalition on Climate, Forests, and Agriculture is a multi-sectoral movement that brings together more than 400 representatives from agribusiness, civil society, the financial sector, and academia, working to promote a new development paradigm that reconciles agricultural production with forest conservation, climate action, and sustainable use of natural resources. Since its creation, the Coalition has played an active role in the formulation of public policies, in dialogue between sectors, and in supporting initiatives that combine climate ambition with concrete territorial transformation.
One of its main contributions to restoration has been the development and stewardship of the Brazilian Restoration Observatory, the first national platform fully dedicated to monitoring restoration efforts in Brazil. As an initiative of the Coalition, it compiles and systematizes data from multiple sources to provide a transparent, reliable, and regularly updated picture of restoration progress across the country. This strengthens the implementation of public policies and supports investors, practitioners, and decision-makers with evidence-based information. By connecting actors across scales, the Observatory promotes technical exchanges and identifies trends and gaps in implementation.
At the international level, the Coalition, through the Observatory, already collaborates with initiatives such as RESTOR and FAO’s Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM), positioning itself as a bridge between national data systems and global agendas. By joining Initiative 20x20, the Coalition intends to expand this role by:
- Adding value to the Monitoring Task Force by sharing methodologies, indicators, and lessons learned from the Brazilian context, while aligning national data collection with regional efforts.
- Contributing to the Policies Task Force by sharing insights on how restoration data can inform public policies and governance mechanisms, as well as by facilitating dialogue between Brazilian stakeholders and other Latin American countries.
- Strengthening the regional restoration economy, by showcasing Brazil’s experience and fostering opportunities for cross-country learning and investments.
These two complementary roles—the Coalition as a broad platform for dialogue and influence, and the Observatory as a robust monitoring and transparency tool—can contribute greatly to the goals of Initiative 20x20 and vice versa.
