Complex Forests' mission is to create a scalable, traceable and replicable business model for degraded land restoration in the Amazonian Biome that restores biodiversity, sequesters carbon and takes pressure off the natural environment, while providing high-quality value added timber products and carbon credits for domestic and international markets. Born from decades of localised managerial and manufacturing experience in the region, the group will create a fully verticalized supply chain from seedling to finished product with the direct aim of producing materials to decarbonise the construction industry.
Complex Forests plans to do this through multiple phases, beginning in the State of Pará, with its polyculture mosaic grid system (70% Parica, 20% Eucalyptus and 10% Teak) and scaling into native mixed species planted forests (phase 2) which will begin with a pilot project in collaboration with local experts in native silviculture. These polyculture planted forests will cover 50% of their land, the remaining 50% will be kept under conservation.
The group's history and experience in the manufacturing and commercialisation of timber products, as well as their innovative ideas towards bringing the planted forest industry into a more sustainable and biodiverse future, allow them to bring a complimentary and focused area of benefits to the table at Initiative 20x20. Complex Forests especially looks forward to working with partners to improve the environmental impact of planted forests, and through doing so, providing essential data that allows other stakeholders in the region, whether private companies, NGO’s or research institutions, to join them in facilitating the restoration of degraded lands.
