Founded in 2013, Terrasos is a pioneer in habitat banking. In Colombia, it established Latin America's first habitat bank in 2016 and has since contributed to protecting more than 2,000 hectares of essential Colombian ecosystems through this mechanism. Soon, Terrasos expects to expand this number with the registration of 4 new habitat banks and its habitat banking accelerator program. Its aim is to protect and restore more than 55,000 hectares of land in Colombia.
Terrasos specializes in structuring and operating environmental investments, focusing on four main areas: ecosystem offsets, impact analysis, development of ecosystem intervention strategies, and knowledge production and management. The group believes that its experience in promoting private sector environmental investments and building high-impact partnerships with public and private actors would contribute greatly to the Initiative's goals. Some of its relevant partnerships include Partnerships for Forests (UK), USAID (US), and IDB, among others.
Terrasos strongly identifies with Initiative 20x20's mission to protect and restore 50 million hectares of land by 2030. In line with this mission, the organization will contribute to the following task forces:
- Investment Ecosystem: Terrasos has channeled over USD 1 million to habitat banking in Colombia through sustainable investments and environmental offsets.
- Best Practices: it has developed numerous protocols to ensure that its habitat banks have a positive impact on biodiversity as well as integrity in Terrasos' investments.
- Biodiversity: as this is the core of Terrasos' business, the organization has firsthand experience on how to restore and boost biodiversity in Colombian ecosystems.
- Policy and Legislation: Terrasos played an essential role in developing the national regulation for habitat banks in Colombia, achieving nationwide policy impact.
As a technical partner, Terrasos looks forward to sharing its knowledge and experience to strengthen Initiative 20x20. The group also looks forward to sharing relevant opportunities with all partners and would be happy to provide more details or additional references.
