Belize has prioritized a total of 130,000 hectares to be restored by 2030. The country's goal is to implement restoration practices for 44,000 hectares of land inside and outside protected areas, as well as the restoration of 6,000 hectares of degraded and deforested riparian forests. In addition, restoration will improve the management of 80,000 hectares of Belize's agricultural landscape through improved farming and agroforestry practices. The country is also working to finalize the governance arrangements of the Maya Forest Trust, which has committed to maintain 95,508 hectares of broadleaf forest ecosystem in northwestern Belize under conservation and sustainable management.
Belize's recently completed National Landscape Restoration Strategy (NLRS) 2021-2030 will guide forest landscape restoration actions at the national level. The country expects that its restoration activities will contribute to nationwide climate adaptation, reduce emissions caused by land use, and contribute positively to economic development and sustainable growth.
