CONDESAN (Consortium for the Sustainable Development of the Andean Ecoregion) is an environmental NGO based in Peru with a subsidiary office in Ecuador, with 25 years of experience working in the Andean region. CONDESAN's institutional core is the generation of knowledge and information, with an integrated approach, to inform decision-making processes relevant to the sustainable management of natural resources at the local, national, and regional levels, as well as to promote science-policy dialogue. The research initiatives led by CONDESAN involve a wide network of partners in the Andean region, encompassing more than 60 organizations (universities, research centers, NGOs) through collaborative mechanisms, such as regional monitoring networks, the establishment of consortia for inter-institutional collaboration and agreements for project implementation. Over the last ten years, recognizing that there was an important knowledge gap on Andean ecosystems, CONDESAN has coordinated two regional networks, GLORIA-Andes and the Andean Forest Network that focus on the generation of information and knowledge gained from the long-term monitoring of Andean ecosystems.
Also, CONDESAN cooperates with the ministries of the environment of the Andean countries, supporting the development of national-level policy tools to implement restoration activities. An important line of work has been the evaluation and validation of different restoration practices through monitoring processes. All of this information has been translated into guidelines and regional training courses to restore mountainous landscapes designed for the technical staff of national and subnational government agencies and practitioners from NGOs and civil society organizations.
Based on an integrated landscape approach, CONDESAN also works to strengthen environmental governance at multiple levels to sustain, replicate and scale up sustainable management across Andean ecosystems. With that in mind, CONDESAN has helped local governments to include restoration goals as part of their land use planning tools.
CONDESAN uses its proven experience, knowledge of the field and strong networks in the Andean region for researching, designing, implementing and monitoring restoration with local and national partners. CONDESAN is part of a consortium that implements the Andean Forest Program, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented in cooperation with Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation. CONDESAN has built a substantial body of knowledge on the restoration of forest and non-forest ecosystems and degraded landscapes in the Andean countries, including aspects related to the governance, the ecology and the sustainability of restoration processes.
