Global Forest Generation (GFG) was founded in 2018 with the mission of delivering large-scale and long-term restoration of priority forest ecosystems by planting the right species in the right places. The focus of GFG is to overcome obstacles to forest ecosystem protection and restoration at scale and plant native species in partnership with local communities, NGOs, universities, businesses and governments. GFG’s first major initiative is Andes Action, which seeks to protect and restore one million hectares of high Andean Polylepis forests over the next 25 years. GFG has convened a growing partnership of organizations in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina to scale up implementation work.
As a technical partner of Initiative 20x20, GFG will:
- Provide technical assistance to restoration projects and programs. In the 2019-2020 planting season, the Andes Action partner network will plant 330,000 native tree saplings, with plans to scale to 1,000,000 per year by 2020-2021. The goal is to double the number of trees that the network plants every year. GFG partners directly with local and indigenous communities to forge restoration agreements that make that goal possible.
- Identify sites where restoration projects can be developed, working with international partners to apply the latest tools and technologies to scale up impact on the ground.
- Build capacity. GFG provides leadership training, resources, and steady support to current and emerging local restoration leaders and works with government officials at all levels to support restoration in priority areas.
- GFG works with international partners to develop effective, implementable, scalable and investable large-scale forest landscape restoration models. GFG brings key expertise on payment for ecosystem services for water and carbon storage benefits, investment and finance, partnership building and long-term, on-the-ground implementation experience.
- GFG has also joined the Global Partnership on Forest Landscape Restoration and the UN's Nature-Based Solutions coalition.
Through this and other restoration networks, GFG hopes to share knowledge and experience of on-the-ground restoration projects and contribute effectively to furthering the goals of Initiative 20x20 as an active member.
