ARCAS is a Guatemalan NGO that was originally established to rescue and rehabilitate animals confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade. It operates in the Maya Biosphere Reserve in the Peten region of the country's north. Though it continues to focus on biodiversity conservation, it also creates and manages protected areas for wildlife.
ARCAS, as a leader in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in Guatemala, operates one of the largest and most complex wildlife rescue centers in the Americas and supports wildlife trafficking enforcement efforts.
The organization purchased and restored the 25 hectares of the El Salado Wildlife Reserve on the Pacific coast of Guatemala. lt established and is administrator of the 4000-ha Hawaii Multiple Use Area. Together with the UNDP, it is proposing to the government to expand this area roughly 1.2 miles into the sea to form a marine protected area of approximately 30,000 ha. ln Peten, on the southern edge of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, it administers 54 ha of protected area, home to its wildlife rescue center. lt is also supporting the administration of the 5000-ha Cordillera Alux Watershed Protection Reserve on the outskirts of Guatemala City.
ARCAS is also a leader in wildlife population monitoring and research and leads efforts to monitor the populations of sea turtles, yellow-naped amazons and other species, and carries out releases of parrots, monkeys and scarlet macaws in the MBR.
ARCAS looks forward to participating as a technical partner in Initiative 20x20, not only to share its 30+ years of technical experience with the different taskforces, but also to further its conservation and restoration plans for the future.
