Connecting biodiverse habitats in Peru's Amazon

Location

San Martín, Peru

About the project:

In San Martín, Peru, Initiative 20x20 partner Andes Amazon Fund has created two new conservation concessions: Cerro Blanco (1,016 hectares) and Los Otorongos (5,390 hectares). These two areas have a disproportionate impact on the region's biodiversity: Their proximity to the Gran Pajaten Biosphere Reserve expands  key ecological corridors that species use to migrate between habitats.

Cerro Blanco

Located in one of the 28 recognized fragile ecosystems of San Martín, Cerro Blanco houses important water resources and conserves numerous flora and fauna including the South American tapir (Tapirus terrestres), the red brocket deer (Mazana americana), the copaiba plant (Copaifera paupera), largely known for its medicinal value, and mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla).

Los Otorongos

The humid forests of Los Otorongos nestle the buffer zone of Río Abiseo National Park. There, it secures ecosystem services like the provision of safe and abundant water for local people. Los Otorongos also has high ecological value, since it protects various threatened species of flora and fauna, such as the jaguar (Panthera onca), the South American tapir (Tapirus terrestris), and the red cedar (Cedrela odorata).

These projects are a collaboration between Andes Amazon Fund grantee Amazónicos por la Amazonía (AMPA), the Regional Government of San Martín, the Association of Agroecological Farmers of the Watersheds of Yansanache and Sulache Dos de Mayo (AGROECYS), and the Association of Conservation Hurmanas of San Juan of Abiseo (ASHUSJA).
