Founded in 1996 as a financial mechanism for Brazil’s implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Funbio is an NGO with over 20 years of experience managing and distributing funds for hundreds of projects, investments, and protected areas in Brazil. Funbio has worked with the Brazilian government on projects including Amazon Region Protected Areas (ARPA), the world's largest tropical forest conservation initiative in the world, the National Public-Private Biodiversity Integrated Action Project (Probio II), and the Atlantic Forest Conservation Fund.
To date, Funbio has managed more than USD 600 million in project assets and worked extensively with both local NGOs and major donors such as the GEF, USAID, the EU, and private companies. Funbio has supported more than 280 projects from over 200 organizations. Funbio has supported more than 310 protected areas that amount to 67 million hectares of land and ocean. Most of this protected land is in the Amazon.
As a partner of Initiative 20x20, Funbio both promotes and executes restoration projects in Brazil, including:
- Amazonia Live which aims to use a seed-mix technique (“muvuca”) to plant a million trees around the headwaters and sources of the Xingu River in Mato Grosso.
- REDD+ Early Movers, which will foster environmental regularization of productive properties and support the restoration value chain in the state of Mato Grosso.
- Sustainable Celluloid Chain Project, focused on the support of enhancing large scale restoration monitoring and technologies in the state of Espírito Santo together with TNC.
- Forest Economy, a project in the state of Pará that encompasses restoration, agroecology, agroforestry systems and forest management.
- Forestry Innovation, a project that aims to design a financial mechanism to promote the socio-economic development of the territory surrounding the Jirau Hydroelectric Plant, based on the different chapters of the forestry cycle, such as: restoration, reforestation, and logging and no-logging forest management.
- Supporting the Amazon Restoration Alliance in partnership with Conservation International.
