The von Humboldt Institute is a civil non-profit organization associated with Colombia’s Ministry of Environment, Housing and Territorial Development (MADS) founded in 1993 to be the biodiversity research arm of the National Environmental System (SINA). The Institute works primarily in Colombia, but is also a member of international partnerships like the Iberoamerican Restoration Society (SIACRE).
The Institute has expertise in restoration due to its experience in local, regional, and national restoration initiatives. The von Humboldt Institute has been an active player in supporting MADS’s construction of Colombia’s National Restoration Plan. Furthermore, in addition to operating landscape restoration projects in Antioquia and Valle Del Cauca, the Institute also engages in participatory planning with local communities to implement restoration in some regions of Colombia.
Within Initiative 20x20, the Institute aims to provide scientific information and support decision-making in restoration ecology, landscape planning, implementation of restoration and monitoring field projects in strategic ecosystems (e.g. watersheds, dry forests, paramos, humid forests).
