The Costa Rican Foundation for Ecological Restoration (FUCORE) is the first non-governmental organization in Costa Rica specialized in ecosystem restoration. The organization leads an active and participatory approach while seeking to promote and generate projects that involve all sectors: public, private, and community. The foundation is in an initial stage and is developing research processes and project initiation efforts.
FUCORE will work towards the implementation, development and execution of ecosystem restoration practices, based on the standards defined by the Society for Ecological Restoration.
Some of the main objectives pursued by the foundation are:
- Contributing towards the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration Strategy.
- Contributing decisively to the mitigation of climate change through actions aimed at the implementation of focused, concrete, and technically supported projects.
- Promoting resilience to the effects and consequences of environmental degradation and global warming.
- Creating a national alliance in Costa Rica for ecological restoration that allows all sectors to contribute to the restorative process as part of the responsible use of natural capital.
A team of professionals from different technical, scientific, and social science areas is working on the implementation of these planned goals. This same team brings knowledge and project development experience to Initiative 20x20.
