Founded in 1974, Bioversity International is a global organization headquartered in Rome, Italy that focuses on research-for-development in agricultural and tree biodiversity to meet new global challenges. By delivering scientific evidence, management practices and policy options to use and safeguard agricultural and tree biodiversity, Bioversity International aims to reduce malnutrition, increase productivity and reduce risk, adapt to climate change, and mitigate shrinking food diversity.
Bioversity International’s approximately 300 staff work on three initiatives in five regions across the globe: 1) Healthy diets from sustainable food systems, 2) Productive and resilient farms, forests and landscapes, and 3) Effective genetic resources conservation and use.
Bioversity's restoration work in the context of Initiative 20x20 focuses on promoting the integration of biodiversity at species, functional and genetic level in tree-based restoration. Our work is organised along the following thematic areas:
-We develop decision support tools like the Diversity for Restoration tool to assist restoration practitioners, decision makers and donors with the selection of appropriate tree species and seed sources that are best matched with the environmental conditions of restoration sites and best contribute to user-defined restoration objectives.
-We work with policy makers to promote the development and strengthening of functional seed systems for resilient restoration at the national level.
-We contribute to building the evidence base that the adequate use of native tree diversity in restoration projects will lead to higher ecological, social and economic benefits than conventional monoculture plantations.
