Founded in the Netherlands in 1965, SNV is a non-profit international development organization that focuses on capacity building to alleviate poverty. Headquartered in The Hague, SNV works with governments, local partners, businesses, institutes, and communities to improve the quality of life for millions of people in 38 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
SNV works in three “sectors,” Agriculture, Energy, and Water, Sanitation & Hygiene. By sharing expertise in these topics, SNV contributes to solving leading global problems through local solutions that result in lasting change. SNV focuses on enabling four factors they consider essential for successful development – inclusive development, systematic change, local ownership, and contextualised solutions – to empower communities to alleviate poverty and guide their own development.
In the context of the European Union's Horizon 2020 research program, SNV is currently co-executor of the research project "Breeding Coffee for AgroForestry Systems". The research is led by CIRAD and runs in Vietnam, Cameroon and Nicaragua. The main objective of the project is to develop new coffee hybrids with high productivity under agroforestry systems, in order to develop coffee cluster with SAF with small producers, guaranteeing the market for production. (The cluster will be developed considering market demand.) Coffee hybrids produced under SAF will contribute to the reduction of deforestation and will increase forest cover in natural ecosystems. In addition, capacity building, dissemination and accessibility of the new hybrid for small producers will be guaranteed.
