Canopy Energy is a company working to develop, finance and manage renewable energy projects. Its portfolio is for the most part focused on Africa and Paraguay. Canopy Energies has developed a partnership and investment relationship with Investancia, with which it aims to reforest 10,000 hectares of deforested cattle land in Oriental Chaco in Paraguay.
Canopy Energy uses a silvopastoral model to produce vegetable oil as biofuel. The system involves planting Pongamia trees in previously forested pasturelands that would otherwise not be suitable for restoration. The model is highly replicable, since Pongamia trees improve livestock yields and do not compete with croplands. It offers a significant positive social impact for local people and is economically viable and scalable.
It is expected that demand for biofuel will increase over the coming year since 62 countries have established a cap on emissions in the aviation sector. With this in mind, Canopy supports Initiative 20x20 by identifying sites that could benefit from silovpasture restoration projects in Paraguay. Thus far, it has identified more than 50,000 hectares of deforested cattle farms.
Canopy Energy is a technical partner for Initiative 20x20 that uses its strong knowledge and experience to promote renewable project management and reforestation of deforested lands in Latin America.
