Viridis Terra International
Founded in Canada in 2015, Viridis Terra is a green technology company that brings together a multidisciplinary, innovative, and experienced team specialized in ecosystem restoration and sustainable management through large-scale reforestation. Viridis Terra is committed to leading a sustained fight against climate change and land degradation in an ongoing partnership with other institutions, local NGOs, global NGOs, and all levels of government. The company's mission is to contribute significantly toward improving the future for current and future generations. Viridis Terra's programs are devoted to developing green economic alternatives. They promote social and environmental responsibility, establish better management practices, and support the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Viridis Terra has been operating in Peru since 2019 and has developed various productive and adapted land management models. The company's Integrated Forest Landscape Restoration model (IFLR®) guides Viridis Terra's restoration programs. The IFLR® includes a robust stakeholder certification involvement program that meets the highest international environmental standards, such as Rainforest Alliance, Gold Standard, and Fair Trade. This model's approach goes beyond planting trees, seeking durable, positive and lasting growth, with social, economic, environmental, and governance impacts. The main goal is to develop a green economy based on sustainable activities.
Currently, Viridis Terra operates in the regions of Ucayali, Huánuco, San Martin, and Loreto. More specifically, it supported partner landowners to restore its first 200 hectares in 2021 (30 ha in the district of Yurimaguas and 170 ha in the district of Neshuya.) Considering the advice of the technical team, the landowner participates in choosing the production systems to be established on their land. The selection criteria are the preferences of the partner family, the land use capacity, and the marketing aspects of the organic products to be produced in the short, medium, and long term.
During the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26). Viridis Terra joined Peru's 2021-2030 announcement of reaching the goal of restoring more than 2.15 million hectares of degraded Peruvian land to close the deforestation gap. An agreement with the Peruvian government's National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) will help promote the restoration and management of forest and agroforestry landscapes in some of the country's most environmentally sensitive regions. It includes joint efforts to mobilize mixed funds to strengthen Amazonian communities' capacity to manage new forest and agroforestry landscapes sustainably. All this will be done through demonstration and training centers in the Amazon.
Furthermore, Viridis Terra is also part of the Amazon Business Alliance Initiative, promoted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Government of Canada, and Conservation International, this initiative funds business models focused on biodiversity conservation, adaptation, and mitigation of climate change in the Amazon.
Through its international impact investment vehicle TreesOfLives®, Viridis Terra collaborates with landowners and supports them with the necessary inputs for establishing the chosen productive systems: seeds, seedlings, cuttings, tools, organic fertilizers, and biofertilizers, as well as with land preparation, planting, and maintenance costs.
As a result, Viridis Terra's restoration programs qualify for and facilitate the procurement of important financial resources available through carbon and biodiversity offset programs. The company's restoration interventions produce precious deforestation-free products, such as sustainable timber, fruits, and energy wood, certified and sold on the national and international markets.
The IFLR® model includes:
- Hi-tech tree nurseries;
- Biotech labs for tree micropropagation equipped with somatic embryogenesis, biofertilizer production technology, and forest genomics labs;
- Remote sensing and geo-traceability technologies;
- Phytotechnologies for natural ecosystem restoration, including the patent pending SYLVEN and MICROLIGNUM technologies;
- The TreesOfLives digital platform.
The company aims to scale up its activities across Peru and in three other Latin American countries in the next ten years.
As part of Initiative 20x20, Viridis Terra seeks to share its knowledge and experience with willing countries, technical and financial partners to promote and boost the involvement of the private sector in Latin America's landscape restoration movement.
Viridis Terra is interested in:
- Providing policy advice to governments on land tenure issues, a significant barrier to private investment in degraded landscapes;
- Providing technical assistance for the development of durable restoration strategies and best practices;
- Working with the Best Practices Task Force;
- Engaging with the other Initiative 20x20 members by participating in the Annual Meetings and other technical workshops, discussions, and reports on the restoration;
- Contributing to building individual and institutional capacity at the project level;
- Presenting and promoting restoration programs that could be of interest to impact investors;
- Being engaged regularly with the Initiative’s Secretariat to share any progress.
