From writing the book on bird monitoring to preserving ocean food webs, Point Blue Conservation Science has been at the forefront of protecting nature for half a century. Point Blue develops climate-smart conservation science approaches to address severe drought, rising seas, increasingly extreme weather events, and accelerating habitat degradation. As the leader of the Migratory Shorebird Project, Point Blue works with over 20 partner organizations from Mexico to Chile to support the conservation of coastal wetlands that are critical to both migratory shorebirds and human communities.
Point Blue's climate-smart approach provides a transparent framework on which to balance the current and future benefits of restoration. It brings to Initiative 20x20 unique strengths related to climate-smart conservation as well as development, implementation and monitoring for biodiversity targets.
In particular, it can support Initiative 20x20 in the following ways:
- Point Blue can help integrate climate-smart restoration principles into all Initiative 20x20 restoration work. Its climate-smart approach provides a transparent framework to balance the current and future benefits of restoration.
- Point Blue’s expertise in state-of-the-art data analytics to develop conservation prioritization can help the Initiative 20x20 partners select where restoration can have the greatest benefit for increasing biodiversity and ecosystem services.
- Point Blue has developed a flexible Nature Based Adaptation Framework that can help coastal decision-makers (1) efficiently identify a range of nature-based adaptation strategies that address coastal climate change vulnerabilities, and (2) evaluate how well these adaptation strategies achieve local communities' objectives.
- Point Blue is developing indicators to track conservation and restoration success and monitoring tools to support that work.
- Point Blue brings expertise in building partnerships to develop and implement coordinated conservation strategies, science, and monitoring.
Through science, partnerships, and outreach, Point Blue strives for ecosystems that sustain healthy wildlife and human communities well into the future.
