Fundacion Corcovado is a Costa Rican organization of activists dedicated to the preservation and conservation of the fragile biodiversity of Costa Rica. It does this by promoting environmental education, regenerative agriculture, ecosystem restoration, sustainable and community-based tourism, and strengthening protected areas.
Some of the organization's achievements are:
- More than 4500 students have received Environmental Education in their schools, and 500 children have participated in youth groups in 4 different communities in the last 18 years. At some point, the organization had up to 22 schools that were receiving Environmental Education once a week.
- We have protected 10,672 sea turtles' nests, and we have freed 113,626 hatchlings to the Ocean, increasing 10-fold their opportunity to survive to reproductive age. Many of the threats that these reptiles face are human-made, including the reduction of nesting grounds due to climate change and the increase of seawater levels.
- More than 500 tourism employees are trained for good practices to mitigate the impact of tourism, and over 25 companies are trained to reduce or remove their single-use plastic.
- 27 protected areas have been supported and strengthened through general and specific plans, infrastructure, implementation, and hiring of park rangers.
- More than 60 community members trained to improve their tourism entrepreneurship to help them protect the forest they protect in their private lands.
- 53 local families were trained in regenerative agriculture last year to recover the ecosystems in their soils. Regenerative agricultural practices can turn back the carbon clock, reducing atmospheric CO2 while also boosting soil productivity and increasing resilience to floods and drought. Such regenerative techniques include planting fields year-round in crops or other cover and agroforestry that combines crops, trees, and animal husbandry.
- Our new forest restoration program will plant 3000 trees by 2023 and restore at least 10 hectares of farmland by 2030.
The foundation community efforts are focused on reducing the impact of climate change in communities and ecosystems, especially in the Osa Peninsula and the Talamanca Mountain Range. However, its work expands all over the country.
As a technical partner, Fundacion Corcovado supports Initiative 20x20's goals by:
- Identifying sites where restoration projects could be developed.
- Sharing knowledge and experience with conservation and restoration practices with other Initiative 20x20 members and within some of the Initiative's Task Forces.
- Identifying restoration and conservation projects that could be of interest to impact investors.
- Organizing and/or participating in workshops on topics related to restoration and conservation efforts (monitoring systems, incentives, seed and plant supply, etc.).
- Building capacity at both the project and the government level.
- Contributing to the technical agenda of the Initiative through participation in technical reports, meetings and other discussions.
- Communicating with the Initiative’s Secretariat, helping it to move the restoration agenda forward.
