Based in the city of Cobán in Guatemala, the Federation of Cooperatives of the Verapaces (FEDECOVERA, R.L.) is an autonomous second-level cooperative founded on February 23rd, 1976. Led by small producers organized in first-level cooperatives and associations, the group works with 8 products: cardamom, coffee, tea, allspice, cocoa, turmeric, essential oils and sustainable forestry.
FEDECOVERA will contribute to Initiative 20x20 on issues regarding forest restoration, agroforestry, and sustainable management of agroforestry value chains. The organization's objective is to seek strategic alliances to strengthen its restoration work. FEDECOVERA brings its expertise to Initiative 20x20 through:
- Experience in sustainable forest management under FSC certification standards
- Work in strengthening the timber value chain
- Promotion of forest restoration projects through reforestation and agroforestry
- Experience in issues of value chains under agroforestry systems (SAF)
- Supporting landscape management and biodiversity conservation
- Implementing good practices in the issues of restoration and ecosystem management linked to productive systems.
With regards to its membership in Initiative 20x20, FEDECOVERA has great interest in:
- Good practices and a focus on guidelines and principles to ensure that restoration activities provide environmental, economic, and social benefits
- How to include the impacts of biodiversity in restoration carbon markets
- Using carbon markets to support landscape restoration in Latin America
