Founded in 1985 by a group of visionary citizens, ANCON is an NGO that works with national and international organizations, academic and research centers, local communities and businesses for protection and restoration of the natural resources and the biodiversity of Panama. ANCON focuses on promoting conservation, sustainable production, environmental advocacy, and environmental education to achieve its goals. ANCON offers reforestation as one of its “specialized services.”
ANCON is one of the five signatory members of the Alianza por el Millon, Panama’s public-private partnership signed and endorsed by Panamá's President for the restoration of 1 million hectares of degraded forest lands led by the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and two other civil society organizations. ANCON also protects 30,000 ha of forest in the Punta Patiño Private Natural Reserve, established as a private reserve by the organization in 1993.
As part of the Alianza por el Millón, ANCON has developed guides for the banking sector regarding sustainable cattle ranching as it is the main driver of deforestation in Panama, was able to introduce social and environmental risks as one of the risks to be reviewed by banks as issued by the Bank Superintendency and has initiated public-private partnerships at the local level to restore watersheds and degraded areas of strategic importance.
