Founded in the 1950s in response to a worldwide concern for the fate of tropical and subtropical forests, the International Society of Tropical Foresters (ISTF) is committed to the protection, wise management and rational use of the world’s tropical forests. After a 5 year hiatus, the organization was reactivated in 2017. Since then, more than 1600 people from around the world have joined. The ISTF Mission is to faciliate and promote sharing of best practices for the effective management, protection, and equitable and ecologically sustainable use of tropical forests and natural resources in the tropical and subtropical regions across the globe. ISTF carries out this mission by acting as a collaborative information sharing network, with over 1850 members and ten chapters in 106 countries.
These members have a wide range of expertise in topics related to tropical forestry. ISTF has about 300 members in Latin America and many others worldwide with a strong interest in the region. With this foundation of expertise, ISTF stands ready to make substantial contributions to one or more of the Initiative 20x20 Task Forces. Through its communications products like the ISTF Update and ISTF Newsletter, its website, and social media channels, ISTF-Global can inform its members about Initiative 20x20 endeavors and make this information available to the broader restoration community. Many members have the necessary expertise to contribute to the task forces of the initiative. ISTF is well-positioned to offer webinars and workshops for its members and the broader community on topics related to restoration.
