The EcoRestoration Alliance (ERA) is a global network of scientists, storytellers, and practitioners working to restore the planet’s climate by restoring the biosphere. It has brought together 125
members representing 70 ecorestoration organizations with projects in more than 20 countries.
Collectively, the ERA's community of practitioners has already restored over 1 million acres with plans for
much more in the coming years.
Several ERA members are already doing groundbreaking restoration and alliance-building work in
Latin America, including:
- Rob de Laet, author of the Marshall Plan for Saving the Amazon
- Atossa Soltani, founder of Amazon Watch and Director of Global Strategy for the Amazon Sacred Headwaters Initiative and Amazonia 80x25
- Valer Clark, Borderlands Restoration Project (Mexico)
- Mike Hands, Inga Foundation (Honduras).
The ERA is also part of Amazon Swarm, a coalition of local projects, scientists, technologists, and
movement builders working to provide the tech, social, and funding infrastructure needed to
implement ecological restoration at scale. The Swarm aims to restore forests in four large areas in
two regions to reinforce the biotic pump, pull moisture in from the Atlantic Ocean, lengthen the
rainy season by a month, and increase precipitation by 20% within two decades.
Another key area of strength of the ERA is the governance, coordination, and capacity-building
of distributed communities of practice, which the alliance is currently leveraging to compete for the Carbon
Removal XPrize. Through this effort, it is becoming an effective mobilizer of small- and
medium-scale restoration projects around the world. As such, the ERA is growing its capacity to
provide the following forms of support to the Initiative 20x20 network:
- A multi-disciplinary team of scientists, practitioners, and journalists who can review evaluate, and popularize proposals and projects
- Investable portfolios of small- and medium-sized projects tailored to financial partners' investment strategies
- Tools for managing, monitoring, and promoting these projects effectively and efficiently, including vetting proposals, allocating funds, assessing impact, and more
The ERA believes that its multidisciplinary approach and deep expertise in coordinating distributed communities of practice will contribute significantly to Initiative 20x20's objectives and is pleased to be part of this vital effort.
