Founded in 2009, Southern Wings is a partnership of U.S. state fish and wildlife agencies (agencies). It facilitates partnerships between these agencies and partners in Mexico, Central, South America and the Caribbean to successfully conserve shared migratory bird species throughout their annual life cycle. With its partners, Southern Wings helps focus vital conservation funds on targeted sites in migratory corridors and nonbreeding grounds for more than one-half of North America’s breeding birds. These sites include forests, wetlands, and grasslands that face continually mounting pressures. Southern Wings sets the stage for international collaboration by bringing state fish and wildlife agencies together with colleagues beyond our national borders.
Agencies connect with in-country partners to engage in conservation projects which have a direct linkage and positive impact on one or more shared-priority migratory birds. Once funds are allocated to a project, Southern Wings relies on partner organizations to carry out on-site work leading to enhance the habitat of wintering bird species. Depending on the needs of particular species and habitats, on-site work may include any of a variety of strategies, such as land purchases and habitat restoration as well as training, outreach, and education programs. This work impacts more than just birds. It also supports the conservation of resident species; helps provide clean air, clean water, and healthy habitats; helps maintain habitats resilient to natural disasters; and supports human well-being.
Southern Wings has provided funding to support conservation projects in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, and Honduras, all of which include a restoration component. Some of this support has moved through American Bird Conservancy and other peer partners of Initiative 20x20.
Thirty-nine U.S state fish and wildlife agencies have contributed over $3.2 million on the ground for conservation for 24 projects in 11 countries, leveraging millions more.
